HARRISONBURG, VA — Host James Madison outscored East Carolina for a 99-89 win on Saturday as Darius Banks had 22 points for the Dukes.
JMU (5-3) hit 31 of 52 field goal attempts for 59.6 percent.
“I’m very disappointed in the way we guarded,” said Pirate coach Joe Dooley. “We didn’t guard the dribble and they were able to get downhill. Our offensive stats were good enough to win 99 percent of the games.
“That’s why this is especially disappointing. We spent so much more time on defense and it doesn’t look like it. It’s very disheartening.”
ECU (2-6) was led by freshman Logan Curtis, who came off the bench for 18 points on six 3-pointers. Jayden Gardner and Tyrie Jackson had 16 points each for the Pirates. Tremont Robinson-White added 14 points in his first game for ECU.
Jackson and Tristen Newton each had four assists in the setback.
JMU had an 11-0 run early in the second half after leading 46-39 at the break.
The Dukes expanded their advantage to 75-51 with 9:29 to go.
Dwight Wilson finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Dukes, who led 34-27 on the boards. Michael Christmas had three of 10 blocked shots for JMU.
Jackson led ECU’s rebounding with seven.
The Pirates host Coppin State (3-6) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
