Appalachian State deals Pirates a road loss

BOONE — East Carolina was dealt a second straight competitive road loss, 68-62, at Appalachian State on Tuesday night.

“We had some spurts and we had some inexperienced mistakes,” said Pirates coach Joe Dooley after ECU dropped to 1-2.

The Pirates had won three straight in the series but couldn’t overcome a 22-point effort from Justin Forrest and 19 more from Adrian Delph at the Holmes Convocation Center.

The Mountaineers (2-1) took an initial 11-0 lead before ECU responded with an 11-3 run to get back into the nonconference contest.

ASU went ahead to stay at 52-50 with seven minutes remaining on a basket by Isaac Johnson. The hosts made 10 of 14 free throws in the last 45 seconds of the game.

Seth LeDay had 20 points and seven rebounds for ECU.

“He’s rounding into shape,” Dooley said.

Brandon Suggs had 12 points off the bench for the Pirates, who made 21 of 59 from the field for 35.6 percent. ECU dropped just five of 22 beyond the arc, 22.7 percent. The Pirates were 15 of 19 at the line, 78.9 percent.

ECU had a 36-35 lead on the boards, but committed more turnovers, 14-13.

Jayden Gardner had 11 points and seven rebounds for ECU. Tristen Newton had five assists in the loss.

The Pirates return home to take on Liberty on Saturday at 4 p.m.
