ANNAPOLIS, MD — Host Navy outscored East Carolina 39-28 in the second half to take a 62-57 win over the Pirates on Friday night.
Two free throws by Greg Summers with 5:23 to go put the Midshipmen ahead to stay at 48-47.
ECU had a 29-23 lead at halftime.
The Pirates were within 58-57 with 16 seconds to go after a jumper by Seth LeDay. Navy (1-1) scored its last four points from the free throw line.
Sophomore Jayden Gardner led the scoring for ECU (1-1) with 15 points. Gardner was four for nine from the field and made all seven of his free throws in addition to claiming a team-high eight rebounds.
LeDay had 11 points for the Pirates and freshman J.J. Miles scored 10.
ECU made 22 of 54 field goal attempts (40.7 percent), five of 18 beyond the arc (27.8 percent) and eight of 13 from the line (61.5 percent).
Each team claimed 31 rebounds.
Freshman Trsiten Newton had five of the Pirates’ 15 assists.
Brandon Suggs had seven points for ECU and Logan Curtis had three of 12 steals by the visitors. Ludgy Debaut blocked a pair of Navy shots.
A balanced scoring attack for the Midshipmen included 14 points from Cam Davis, 13 each from John Carter Jr. and Summers, and 11 from Luke Loehr.
Carter had a game-high 10 rebounds and led the hosts in assists with five.
Auburn defeated Davidson, 76-66, in the first game at Navy’s Alumni Hall on Friday night.
ECU visits Appalachian State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
