WICHITA, KS — Wichita State’s Clayton McGinness pitched a complete game in a 3-1 American Athletic Conference win over East Carolina on Saturday.
McGinness (5-4) allowed five hits and one earned run while walking one with four strikeouts.
The Pirates (38-12, 17-3 AAC) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth after a leadoff single up the middle by Thomas Francisco. A sacrifice bunt by Brady Lloyd moved pinch runner Christian Jayne to second. An RBI single by Ryder Giles gave ECU a 1-0 advantage.
Left-hander Jake Kuchmaner pitched six and two-thirds innings for the Pirates. He yielded six hits and an unearned run while walking three and striking out eight.
The Shockers (23-27, 7-13) tied the score in the seventh after a 2-out single by Jacob Katzfey. A throwing error on a single by Jordan Boyer accounted for the tying run.
Hunter Gibson and Katzfey had RBI singles off Gavin Williams (1-3) in the eighth.
Alec Burleson, Lane Hoover, Turner Brown, Francisco and Giles had hits for ECU, which had a 5-game winning streak halted.
The deciding game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m., Eastern time.
