GREENVILLE — East Carolina opened its American Athletic Conference series against No. 18 Connecticut with a 5-1 win at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Thursday night.
The 12th-ranked Pirates got 14 strikeouts from junior left-hander Jake Agnos (5-2) in eight and two-thirds innings. Evan Voliva came on to get the final out on a foul pop that first baseman Alec Burleson tracked down in front of the Huskies’ dugout.

Brady Lloyd had three hits and two RBIs for ECU, which improved to 27-10 overall and 9-1 in the AAC.
Burleson had two hits and an RBI, driving in Lloyd with a single up the middle in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead..
The only run for UConn (24-14, 7-6) came on a homer to right center by Pat Winkel in the top of the second.
The Pirates went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second as an RBI double by Lloyd brought in Bryant Packard. The advantage moved to 3-1 in the fourth as a single from Lloyd scored Lane Hoover.
Turner Brown scored on a bunt single by Jake Washer in the seventh and ECU added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Packard.
Getting two hits each for the Pirates were Packard, Brown, Burleson and Washer. Thomas Francisco had a pinch hit double in the eighth.
Due to the forecast of rain on Friday, the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
