WILMINGTON — East Carolina tuned up for a trip to the West Coast with a 9-1 win on the East Coast on Tuesday night at UNC Wilmington.
Six Pirate pitchers scattered six hits and totaled 14 strikeouts as No. 8 ECU improved to 25-7 going into a 3-game series that starts Friday at 9 p.m. (ET) at No. 1 UCLA (24-6).
Trey Benton (3-0) got the win with Sam Lanier, Cam Colmore, Evan Voliva, Zach Barnes and Garrett Saylor contributing relief stints.
Benton started and went two and two-thirds innings. He allowed four hits and one run (earned) while fanning six without a walk.
Lanier and Colmore added four strikeouts each.
Seahawk miscues allowed the Pirates to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Lane Hoover reached second on a throwing error, took third on a wild pitch and came home on a passed ball.
UNCW slipped to 17-16.
Turner Brown and Thomas Francisco had two hits each for ECU, which scored in six of nine innings.
Spencer Brickhouse, Jake Washer, Bryson Worrell (double) and Ryder Giles (double) contributed to an 8-hit night for the Pirates.
