HOUSTON — Leadoff batter Jared Triolo scored both runs as Houston took a 2-0 win over No. 11 East Carolina on Friday night.
The outcome ended a 10-game winning streak for the Pirates, who slipped to 22-7 overall and 6-1 in the American Athletic Conference.
Triolo singled in the first, stole second and scored on a 2-out throwing error. He hit a home run to left center in the third.
That was all the offensive support that Cougar lefty Lael Lockhart Jr. and Fred Villarreal would need. Lockhart (2-4) scattered four hits over seven and two-thirds innings before Villarreal came on for his seventh save.
Bryant Packard and Brady Lloyd each had two hits for the Pirates. Spencer Brickhouse had a leadoff double in the ninth.
The Cougars improved to 17-13 overall and 3-4 in the AAC going into the second game of the series on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
