TAMPA, FL — Jake Agnos, Ryder Giles and Sam Lanier combined for a shutout as East Carolina took the opening game of its American Athletic Conference series at South Florida, 4-0, on Friday night.
Jake Washer hit a 3-run homer in the second inning as the 14th-ranked Pirates improved to 19-6 overall and 4-0 in the AAC.
Alec Burleson’s RBI single in the third completed the scoring.
Agnos (4-1) went six innings and allowed three hits while walking two and striking out 11. Lanier yielded one hit and two walks with a pair of whiffs in two innings. Giles retired all three batters he faced in the ninth.
USF (12-12, 1-3) stranded 10 runners.
Burleson went 2-for-4 as ECU had eight hits.
Thomas Francisco singled to right with two out to get the Pirates started in the second. Brady Lloyd walked before Washer homered to center on the next pitch from Collin Sullivan (2-1).
Bryant Packard walked in the third and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lane Hoover. Burleson singled through the left side on an 0-2 pitch to bring in Packard.
The second game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
