COLLEGE PARK, MD — East Carolina pitchers Tyler Smith and Alec Burleson were effective in a 2-1 win at Maryland on Saturday, assuring the Pirates a win in the nonconference series.
ECU (14-6), ranked as high as No. 14, goes for a sweep of the Terps (10-7) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Pirates scored all the runs needed with a 2-run second. Burleson led off with a hit and Turner Brown walked. Despite a double play, Burleson scored on an infield single by Brady Lloyd, who stole second and came home on a single to left by Dusty Baker.
Taylor Wright doubled in the fourth for Maryland, stole third and scored on a passed ball.
Burleson was 2-for-4 in addition to picking up his first save.
Smith worked six innings, limiting the Terps to three hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out a pair.
Burleson did not allow a hit while walking two and striking out three over the last three frames.
