GREENVILLE — Christian Smallwood doubled off the left field fence to score Turner Brown from second and lift East Carolina to a 4-3 walk-off win over Marist in the 12th inning at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday.
The 14th-ranked Pirates improved to 11-5 and will seek to sweep the three-game series with the Red Wolves (4-7) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Marist took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Tyler Kapuscinski. ECU pulled even in the fourth after Spencer Brickhouse and Jake Washer started the inning with singles.
Washer was erased on one of four double plays by the visitors, but Brickhouse scored on a single by Seth Caddell.
Randy Taveras and Kapuscinski had RBIs in the fifth as the Red Foxes took a 3-1 lead.
The Pirates pulled within 3-2 in the sixth on a home run by Brown. Lane Hoover scored on a ground out by Thomas Francisco as ECU tied the score at 3 in the eighth. Hoover had doubled with one out and moved to third on a passed ball.
Brown and Hoover had single in the 12th before Smallwood connected off Alex Pansini (1-2).
Brown was 3-for-4 as ECU had 15 hits. Getting two hits each were Brady Lloyd, Hoover and Bryson Worrell.
Tyler Smith started and went four and two-thirds innings for the Pirates. He allowed eight hits, three runs (all earned) with one walk and three strikeouts.
Alec Burleson, Evan Voliva and Sam Lanier (1-0) combined to keep Marist scoreless the rest of the way. ECU totaled 10 strikeouts.
