GREENVILLE — Monmouth used a five-run seventh inning to erase a 5-1 East Carolina lead and the Hawks went on to take an 8-5 win at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Sunday.

The Pirates took the series, 2-1, by virtue of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

A bases-loaded double by Ryder Giles gave ECU a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Sunday.

The Pirates led 5-1 after solo home runs by Thomas Francisco in the third and sixth innings.

Colin McCreary had an RBI double to start the Hawks’ scoring in the seventh. The visitors closed the gap to 5-3 as a run scored on a wild pitch. Kyle Norman had an RBI single before a two-run double by J.D. Andreessen put Monmouth ahead, 6-5.

Zach Schild added a two-run homer for the Hawks (1-5) in the ninth.

Monmouth outhit the Pirates, 11-6. ECU was playing without two of its top offensive performers, Bryant Packard and Spencer Brickhouse, due to ailments.

Evan Voliva (1-1) yielded the go-ahead run in the seventh and was charged with the loss. Ryan Lillie (1-1) got the win in relief and Jordan McCrum pitched the last three innings for his first save.

ECU (5-2) hosts Air Force (4-3) on Monday at 4 p.m. The Falcons swept a doubleheader from Navy at Grainger Stadium in Kinston on Sunday.
