NEW ORLEANS — East Carolina took its first road win of the season, 85-81, at Tulane on Saturday night as Shawn Williams scored 27 points and Isaac Fleming added 20.
Fleming made a 3-pointer with 3:47 to go for a 73-72 lead. That started an 8-0 run that included a dunk from Seth LeDay, a free throw by Williams and a layup by Fleming that pushed the Pirates’ advantage to 78-72 with 3:02 left.
After the Green Wave closed within 80-78 on a three by Caleb Daniels with 1:10 remaining, ECU closed out the victory from the free throw line as Jayden Gardner dropped three foul shots and Williams sank a pair.
LeDay had 14 points and seven rebounds as the Pirates improved to 10-16 overall and 3-11 in the American Athletic Conference. ECU came in with an 0-9 record on the road this season. Gardner totaled 11 points. Dimitri Spasojevic added seven points. Fleming had 10 rebounds although Tulane had a 39-32 lead on the boards. LeDay had four steals.
ECU stopped a five-game losing streak that dated back to 66-65 home win over Tulane on Jan. 31.
The Green Wave (4-22, 0-14 AAC) got 23 points from Connor Crabtree, 21 from Samir Sehic, 15 from Moses Wood and 14 from Caleb Daniels. Wood grabbed 12 rebounds and Daniels collected five assists.
The Pirates made 27 of 36 free throws (75 percent) and had just eight turnovers compared to 21 for the hosts.
ECU returns home to face Houston (26-1, 13-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
