BUIES CREEK — East Carolina was dealt a 7-6 defeat at Campbell on Wednesday evening as Luis Gimenez singled to right-center to score Matthew Barefoot with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Pirates, ranked as high as No. 9, fell to 3-1, never leading in the damp chill at Jim Perry Stadium.
ECU pulled within 4-3 on a 3-run homer by Bryson Worrell in the eighth. The Camels responded with a 2-run homer by Matthew Christian for a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth.
Brady Lloyd came home in the top of the ninth when Thomas Francisco hit into a double play. Alec Burleson’s 2-run homer tied the score at 6.
Senior right-hander Zach Barnes, the sixth pitcher for the Pirates, came to the mound in the bottom of the ninth and took the loss.
Wyatt Tyson (1-1) pitched the ninth for the Camels and got the win.
Burleson went 3-for-5 as ECU had six hits.
The Pirates start a 3-game series at home against Monmouth on Friday at 4 p.m.
