GREENVILLE — East Carolina took both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Radford on Friday to start the 2019 season.
The 11th-ranked Pirates followed a 6-2 win in the first game by scoring 10 runs in the second inning of the second game en route to a 15-9 victory.
Spencer Brickhouse hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the first game to put ECU ahead, 4-2.
The Pirates went on top to stay in the second game on an RBI double by Bryant Packard for a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Trey Benton got the win in the opener with two and one-third innings out of the bullpen in relief of starter Alec Burleson. Benton had a walk and a strikeout in a scoreless stint. Burleson yielded two runs and three hits over five innings with four strikeouts and a free pass. Cam Colmore and Ryder Giles held the Highlanders scoreless over the final one and two-thirds innings.
Burleson went 4-for-5 with an RBI in the opener. Brickhouse had two hits and three RBIs. Bryson Worrell had two hits and scored twice. Brady Lloyd had a run-scoring single. Jake Washer, Lane Hoover and Turner Brown each had a hit and scored a run.
Freshman Carter Spivey was credited with the win in the second game after starter Jake Agnos went four innings. Agnos gave up four hits, four runs (three earned) while striking out four and walking two.
Spivey worked two innings, allowing three hits and two runs (both earned). He struck out one without a walk. Stephen Wilmer got an out in the seventh before Zach Barnes completed the game. Barnes allowed two hits and three earned runs while fanning four.
Packard had three hits, with a home run in his second at-bat in the second, and three RBIs while scoring three runs in the second game. Worrell had a double and a home run for four RBIs.Seth Caddell had a double and a homer with three RBIs. Washer had three of ECU’s 16 hits in the nightcap with a double and an RBI.
Game three of the season-opening series is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
