GREENVILLE — Samaje Haynes-Jones made seven of nine field goal attempts in scoring 18 points to lead Wichita State to a 65-49 American Athletic Conference win at East Carolina on Wednesday night.
The Shockers went ahead to stay at 13-11 on a 12-foot jump shot by Markis McDuffie with 12:39 left in the first half and expanded their advantage to 34-20 at the break.
“The effort was awful,” said Pirates coach Joe Dooley. “I don’t think we competed like we were capable of.”
ECU made just 18 of 52 field goal attempts, 34.6 percent. The Pirates were four for 14 beyond the arc, 28.6 percent. ECU made nine of 15 free throws, 60 percent.
Wichita State held a 46-27 rebounding advantage. The visitors committed 10 turnovers compared to eight for the Pirates.
McDuffie had 14 points for the Shockers (11-11, 4-6 AAC). Asbjorn Midtgaard had 11 rebounds in the win and Jaime Echenique grabbed 10.
Isaac Fleming and Jayden Gardner scored 11 points each for ECU (9-13, 2-8).
The Pirates visit South Florida (15-6, 5-4) on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
