GREENVILLE — East Carolina defeated Texas-Rio Grande Valley 69-64 on Monday night in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Freshman Jayden Gardner had 15 points as the Pirates improved to 3-2.
Seth LeDay had 12 points and eight rebounds.
ECU led 41-28 at the half after hitting 15 of 25 field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes, 60 percent.
The Vaqueros (3-2) pulled within four points, at 63-59, on a layup by Solomon Hainna with 37 seconds left but could get no closer.
Tyler Foster had 11 points for the Pirates. Isaac Fleming and K.J. Davis added seven points each.
Dimitri Spasojevic and Addison Hill tallied five points apiece for ECU. Tae Hardy had three points. DeShaun Wade and Rico Quinton netted two points each.
Davis had eight rebounds, Spasojevic grabbed seven and Gardner pulled down six as the Pirates had a 45-32 lead on the boards.
The visitors got 16 points from Terry Winn III and 10 from Lesley Varner II.
ECU hosts Prairie View on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Panthers fell to 1-4 with a 74-66 loss to UNC-Greensboro at Greensboro Coliseum on Monday night.
