STORRS, CT — Connecticut handed East Carolina sophomore right-hander Chris Holba (9-1) his first loss of the season as the Huskies topped the Pirates 3-2 on Thursday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
UConn, ranked as high as No. 22, improved to 31-17-1 overall and 13-9 in the American Athletic Conference. No. 9 ECU slipped to 38-14 on the season and is also 13-9 in league play.
The series schedule has been revised to conclude with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 11 a.m.
Troy Stefanski’s RBI ground out in the fifth inning plated Zac Susi for what proved to be the game-winning run.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the second as Andrew Henrickson came home on a UConn throwing error. Henrickson had walked and moved to second on a single by Brady Lloyd.
Chris Winkel and John Toppa had RBI singles in the second as the hosts moved in front, 2-1.
Jake Washer had an RBI single to center in the seventh that scored Bryant Packard and pulled ECU within 3-2.
A bases-loaded double play ended the Pirates’ half of the seventh.
Packard, Spencer Brickhouse and Washer each had two hits in the setback.
