DURHAM — Coming off a series loss at home to South Florida, No. 12 East Carolina found an abundance of offense in a 9-2 win over No. 9 Duke at Jack Coombs Field on Tuesday night.
The Pirates had 15 hits with Jake Washer going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Dwanya Williams-Sutton went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Connor Litton and Alec Burleson each had two hits and drove in a run.
The Blue Devils (30-8) were coming off a series win over Florida State and struck for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Zack Kone.
The Pirates went ahead in the fourth as Litton had an RBI double, stole third and came home on a throwing error.
Another Blue Devil error in the fifth accounted for a run and the Pirates increased the margin to 4-1 in that frame as a ground out by Spencer Brickhouse brought in Bryant Packard.
Burleson singled to score Williams-Sutton in the sixth.
Washer drove in two runs with a single up the middle in a four-run ninth inning for ECU (27-9).
Jake Agnos (4-2) went five innings for the win. He allowed three hits and one run (earned) while walking two and striking out four. Ryan Ross allowed one earned run in three innings of relief. Gavin Williams pitched the ninth.
“I’m really proud of the way the guys played and responded after a tough weekend,” said Pirates coach Cliff Godwin. “We played really well and it started on the mound with Jake Agnos, Ryan Ross and Gavin Williams. The defense was great and offensively, we were locked in from one through nine in the order with quality at-bats.”
The Pirates start an American Atletic Conference series at Memphis on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
