GREENVILLE — South Florida topped East Carolina 5-4 on Sunday to win the American Athletic Conference series with the Pirates two games to one.
The Bulls took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against ECU starter Trey Benton (4-5) on a two-run double by Chris Chatfield.
Brady Lloyd’s two-out double led to a three-run inning for the Pirates in the third. Spencer Brickhouse walked before Jake Washer hit a home run to right for a 3-2 ECU lead.
USF (23-13, 7-5 AAC) regained the upper hand in the fourth on RBIs by Garrett Zech and Tyler Dietrich. Zech got the tying run in on a fielder’s choice ground out. The go-ahead run came in on a single by Dietrich after a balk call moved Zech to second.
After a rain delay, with the wind blowing out, David Villar homered to right field in the seventh for a 5-3 Bulls advantage.
Dwanya Williams-Sutton singled with one out in the eighth and Turner Brown had an infield single before Bryant Packard brought Williams-Sutton home with a hit up the middle.
Lloyd went 3-for-5 with two doubles for ECU. Williams-Sutton was 2-for-2 and reached base on all four of his plate appearances.
The Pirates (26-9, 5-4) visit Duke on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
