CHARLOTTE — East Carolina scored twice in the top of the first inning and never trailed in a 3-1 win at Charlotte on Friday afternoon.
Rather than complete a three-game series on Sunday, the two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Turner Brown led off the game for the No. 19 Pirates (10-3) with a single to left field and scored on a one-out single by Spencer Brickhouse. Jake Washer followed with an RBI single to center to give ECU starter Trey Benton (3-1) a 2-0 lead to protect.
Benton, a sophomore right-hander, went eight and one third innings. He allowed five hits, an earned run in the sixth and two walks while striking out six.
Freshman left-hander Alec Burleson had one whiff in recording his second save.
Washer had an RBI double in the third to score Brickhouse, who had walked.
Harris Yett had an RBI single for the 49ers (8-5) in the sixth.
Washer went 2-for-3 and is hitting .471. Connor Litton, Chandler Jenkins, Seth Caddell and Nick Barber also had hits for the Pirates.
