Multiple media outlets reported Thursday that East Carolina athletic director Jeff Compher will be resigning his position.
The action is expected to become official with a Friday morning meeting of the Board of Trustees.
The board had given Compher an extension and a raise in 2017 with his initial five-year contract due to run out this year.
Compher dismissed Ruffin McNeill as football coach after a 5-6 season in 2015. He brought in Scottie Montgomery, who has had back-to-back 3-9 records.
A decline in support of the football program was part of the general dissatisfaction with Compher’s administration.
Among his accomplishments were hiring Cliff Godwin as baseball coach and a $16.5 million deal spanning 10 years with adidas.
Critics of Compher pointed out that the Pirates did not have a team in postseason competition during the 2016-17 school year.
He implemented department-wide budget cuts that impacted morale and operations.
There was a general assessment that he wasn’t “an East Carolina guy,” which affected fundraising and general enthusiasm for ECU athletics.
Check out “View from the East” on Friday for more on how Compher’s departure impacts the basketball coaching search and the overall athletic program.

Just curious. Will you guys be HOPING for a losing season this fall so we can replace Mo? What do you want the new AD to do with Mo if we are better and we do make a bowl? What if he pulls a Scott Frost and goes undefeated?
