HOUSTON — An incredible shooting day for Houston produced a 109-58 American Athletic Conference win over East Carolina on Sunday at Texas Southern’s H&PE Arena.
The Cougars hit 23 of 31 field goal attempts, a sizzling 74.2 percent, in building a 62-13 lead at the half. Houston made 12 of 16 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes in improving to 22-6 overall and 12-4 in the AAC.
The hosts finished 42 of 63 from the floor for the game (66.7 percent) and dropped 18 of 27 on 3-point attempts, also 66.7 percent.
The Pirates (10-17, 4-12) made just five of 23 from the field in the first half (21.7 percent), warming to 17 of 36 (47.2 percent) for the second half.
ECU’s B.J. Tyson led all scorers with 24 points and also had five assists. Shawn Williams scored 14 points for the Pirates and Isaac Fleming added 13.
Tyson moved into fifth on the school’s career scoring list with 1,529 points.
Armoni Brooks paced the Cougars with 21 points. Houston’s Rob Gray had a double-double in the first half, finishing with 19 points and 11 assists in 22 minutes. Corey Davis Jr. scored 16 points and Gabe Grant added 12.
Fabian White Jr. had nine points and nine rebounds for the Cougars. Galen Robinson Jr. had seven assists in the win.
Fleming led ECU on the boards with six. Houston had a 46-17 rebounding advantage.
The Pirates host Tulsa (17-11, 10-6) for Senior Night on Thursday at 7 p.m.
