GREENVILLE — North Carolina A&T took its first win in its series with East Carolina, topping the Pirates 87-81 at Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum on Sunday as Aaren Edmead scored 25 points for the Aggies (5-1).
A&T is now 1-5 against the Pirates (2-4), who were led by 19 points and 11 rebounds from Kentrell Barkley.
Barkley played the entire 40 minutes and also contributed four assists.
Isaac Fleming had 17 of his 23 points for ECU in the second half. Shawn Williams had 14 of his 19 points in the first half for the Pirates.
B.J. Tyson added 11 points for ECU and became the ninth player in school history to exceed 1,200 points for his career.
Jabari Craig had nine rebounds for the Pirates and blocked three shots.
There were six lead changes in the nonconference contest. A 3-pointer by Tyson with 10:38 remaining gave ECU a 60-55 lead.
The visitors responded with an 11-0 run, going in front to stay at 61-60 on a layup by Denzel Keyes with 9:12 remaining as Edmead assisted.
Both teams shot well. A&T made 26 of 52 field goal attempts for 50 percent
ECU dropped seven of 16 attempts from beyond the arc for 43.8 percent.
The free throw line provided an advantage for the Aggies as they were 29 of 34 for 85.3 percent while the Pirates were 20 of 27 for 74.1 percent.
ECU hosts UNCW (2-3) on Thursday at 8 p.m.
