HOUSTON — Joe Davis hit a three-run homer as host Houston scored six times in the fifth inning in an 8-1 win over East Carolina.

The Cougars (22-8, 3-2) clinched the American Athletic Conference series as the Pirates slipped to 18-14 overall and 0-5 in the league.

Tyler Bielamowicz had a three-run triple for the Cougars to close the scoring in the fifth.

A double to left center by Eric Tyler and an RBI single by Travis Watkins gave ECU a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

A two-run homer by Corey Julks put Houston ahead to stay in the bottom of the fourth.

Watkins finished with two of ECU’s six hits.

Freshman right-hander Trey Benton (3-1) allowed eight hits and seven runs, all earned, over four and two-thirds innings. He walked two and struck out two.

West Covington did not allow a hit over the last three innings for the Pirates, holding the hosts scoreless as he walked one and had one strikeout.

Mitch Ullom (5-2) went six and one-third for the Cougars.

The third game of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. today.
