CHAPEL HILL — Ashton McGee of North Carolina singled with two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th to score Adam Pate and give the Tar Heels a 3-2 win over East Carolina on Tuesday night.
Joe Ingle (3-3) came in for Tyler Smith in the last frame and hit Zack Gahagan with a pitch. Pate subbed in as a pinch runner. Michael Busch had a sacrifice bunt that moved Pate to second. Cody Roberts walked before Brian Miller flied out.
Logan Warmoth walked on four pitches before McGee singled to right on a 2-2 pitch.
UNC improved to 23-6 while ECU slipped to 18-12.
The contest went three hours, 59 minutes before a crowd of 1,105.
Eric Tyler doubled down the left field line and scored on a single by T.J. Riles as the Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Two hit batters and two walks helped the hosts score twice in the second for a 2-1 lead.
Dusty Baker singled and Charlie Yorgen walked for the Pirates in the seventh. The runners moved up on a passed ball. Turner Brown’s ground out to the right side allowed Baker to score the tying run.
ECU outhit the Tar Heels, 11-7. The Pirates left 12 aboard compared to 10 for UNC. Both teams were errorless.
Brown, Tyler, Riles and Baker each had two hits. Brady Lloyd followed a single by Tyler in the 10th with a double to put runners at second and third with one out.
Tyler was retired at the plate on a grounder to second by Riles.
Kirk Morgan started and went three innings for ECU. Sam Lanier and Matt Bridges each pitched two innings. Smith went three innings.
ECU begins a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Houston at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
