WILMINGTON — Host UNC-Wilmington won its eighth straight game and improved to 11-1 with an 81-71 win over East Carolina on Tuesday night.
A 13-0 run by the Seahawks provided a 25-10 lead and UNCW led 35-25 at the half. The Pirates (7-5) played their former Colonial Athletic Association rival evenly in the second half with each team scoring 46 points.
B.J. Tyson, who was scoreless in ECU’s previous game, a 53-35 home loss to College of Charleston on Thursday, paced the Pirates with 17 points on 7-of-12 field goal shooting.
Scoring 12 points each for ECU were Caleb White and a pair of freshmen, Elijah Hughes and Jeremy Sheppard. Kentrell Barkley had seven points.
The Seahawks got 26 points from Denzel Ingram and 25 from C.J. Bryce.
A dunk by Deng Riak with 6:11 remaining cut UNCW’s lead to 72-63 but the hosts responded with a 3-pointer by Ingram and the lead stayed in double figures the rest of the way.
Andre Washington and Hughes had five rebounds each as the Seahawks held a 42-36 advantage on the boards.
Sheppard had five assists. Barkley had four assists and three steals.
The Pirates had 15 turnovers compared to nine for UNCW.
ECU hosts Presbyterian (4-6) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
