CINCINNATI — The University of
Cincinnati's 2004 season opening football game at Ohio State on Sept. 4 will
be televised nationally by ESPN. Kickoff for the game has been set for 12
noon EDT.
The game will mark the fourth
straight season in which the Bearcats have opened the season with a national
telecast on ESPN or ESPN2. Cincinnati has had 10 games televised by ESPN or
ESPN2 over the past three seasons.
The season opener will present
new Bearcats head coach Mark Dantonio with the challenge of facing the
Buckeye team for which he served as defensive coordinator during the
previous three seasons. Dantonio's defensive unit helped OSU win the
national championship in 2002.
Dantonio coached under Ohio
State mentor Jim Tressel for a total of eight seasons, including a stint at
Youngstown State from 1986-90.
Cincinnati nearly upset Ohio
State when the teams met in Cincinnati in 2002. The Buckeyes scored the
game-winning touchdown with 3:44 to play.
The Bearcats drove to the OSU
15-yard line in the closing minute but failed to connect on four passes into
the endzone as the Buckeyes prevailed, 23-19, at Paul Brown Stadium.
Former Houston coach signs on with Sooners
NORMAN, OK —Ray McCallum, formerly a head basketball
coach at Houston and Ball State, was hired Tuesday as an assistant to Kelvin
Sampson at Oklahoma.
"We were looking for a coach who possesses tremendous
character and integrity, and who would represent our university and our
basketball program in the right ways," Sampson said.
McCallum, 43, was 44-73 in four years with Houston
before being reassigned to be the athletic department fund-raiser last
season. During his tenure, the Cougars made one postseason appearance, in
the 2002 NIT.
Before coaching at Houston, McCallum was 126-76 in
seven seasons at his alma mater — Ball State — and led the Cardinals to two
NCAA Tournament appearances and one trip to the NIT.
"I'm here to do what needs to be done to help win Big
12 championships, Big 12 tournaments and national championships," McCallum
said. "Our sights are set high."
