Late-day tailgating and night-time
football will be standard fare for East Carolina's September home games.
After opening at West Virginia at 6 p.m. on Sept. 4, the Pirates will host a
pair of 7 p.m. games as the sultry season winds down. Wake Forest will visit
Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Sept. 11 and — after an open Saturday — Conference
USA foe Cincinnati will come calling on Sept. 25.
ECU's remaining home games, all against C-USA rivals, will kick off at 2
p.m. Tulane will be in town Oct. 9, Army visits Oct. 30, and Memphis closes
out the Pirates' league schedule on Nov. 20.
Technically, ECU will also play the role of home team when it closes out its
regular season against N.C. State at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium.
That game in the NFL lair of the defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers
will kick off at 1 p.m.
Tentative starting times for all eleven games on the Pirates' 2004 schedule
were released Thursday by the ECU athletic department's media relations
office.
The Pirates' road games, in addition to the opener against the Mountaineers,
will be at Louisville on Oct. 2 at 3 p.m.; at Southern Mississippi on Oct.
23 at 7:30 p.m.; at Houston on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m.; and at South Florida on
Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.

Kent State QB back on team after pot plea
KENT, OH — Kent State quarterback Joshua Cribbs was reinstated to the
football team after pleading guilty to marijuana possession but his
punishment is not over.
Cribbs had been suspended from all football-related
activity since he was arrested at his home Jan. 17. Though his name has been
returned to the team's roster, he won't be allowed to play in the Sept. 4
season opener at Iowa as part of his punishment, athletic director Laing
Kennedy said.
Long-time East Carolina offensive coordinator Doug
Martin was named head coach of the Golden Flashes in March after spending
last season overseeing the rejuvenation of what had been a lethargic KSU
offense. Martin served as a top assistant at ECU from 1992-2002 under former
Pirate head coach Steve Logan.
Cribbs pleaded guilty to the possession charge Tuesday,
Portage County prosecutor Victor Vigluicci said Wednesday. Cribbs had
originally been charged with trafficking in marijuana.
A sentencing date hasn't been set.
"Josh is reinstated to the football team and will be
able to get back to the business of being a student and an athlete at Kent
State University," Kennedy said in a statement Tuesday.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Cribbs set school records for
season and career total offense last fall. He completed 178-of-364 passes
for 2,424 yards and 14 touchdowns, while rushing 161 times for 701 yards and
14 touchdowns.
The Golden Flashes went 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC
— the school's second-best record in the last 15 seasons.
Cribbs apologized Tuesday to his family, school and
teammates.
"I've learned that I am responsible for all my actions
and during the last five months, the hardest thing has been the fear of not
being able to provide for my family, go to school at Kent State and play
football," he said.
