Cougars coach shifted to new job
Houston coach Ray McCallum was reassigned
Monday to athletic department fund-raiser.
The basketball team was 44-72 in McCallum's four seasons.
"We had a lot of close ballgames and we just didn't come out on top,"
McCallum said. "The next coach has got a good foundation. These guys have
been taught. They've been prepared for victory. I think the next coach is
going to have immediate success."
The Cougars (9-18, 3-13 Conference USA) have lost eight of their last nine
games.
McCallum has three years remaining on his current contract.
"I think after four years my expectation was that we would be farther
along," said athletic director Dave Maggard, who reassigned McCallum. "We
can't afford to be near the bottom of Conference USA. My view is we should
be much more competitive."
The school was disappointed in low attendance at home games, averaging only
2,884 in 17 games at the 8,400 seat Hofheinz Pavilion.
"I saw too many people losing interest in the basketball program and too
many fans canceling season tickets," Maggard said. "We've got to move up
ahead of that and we've got to move right now."
McCallum's best season at the school was 2001-02, when the Cougars finished
18-15 and earned a berth in the NIT.
