An over-enterprising player for one of East Carolina's 2004 non-conference football opponents has allegedly been purchasing firearms and illegally vending them to others.

West Virginia linebacker Muhammad Howard was arrested last week on federal charges of selling guns without a license.

Howard was released on bond Friday after appearing before U.S. Magistrate John S. Kaull. Howard faces a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Clarksburg.

Mountaineers coach Rich Rodriguez said Sunday that Howard would be suspended pending the outcome of the federal investigation.

The complaint accuses Howard of buying more than 20 firearms between March 26 and June 2, 2003, from a Morgantown dealership, and says Howard told Monongalia County sheriff's deputies he sold guns without a license.

Howard could not be reached for comment Sunday. Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Morgan and West Virginia athletic director Ed Pastilong declined comment.

East Carolina is scheduled to play WVU in Morgantown next fall.

Tar Heels coach has near-fainting episode

North Carolina coach Roy Williams said he nearly fainted during the 16th-ranked Tar Heels' 78-71 victory over Florida State on Saturday.

Williams said he has had occasional spells of dizziness since he was "in Little League," and they usually happen when he is yelling or jumping up quickly from a crouching position.

"I've had every kind of test you can have," Williams said. "It's a blood rush. It takes about five seconds then things are fine. I've had great assistant coaches who have usually caught me if I start slipping a little bit. I've never fallen completely. I can always see. It's no big deal, it really isn't."

Williams did not say when exactly the spell occurred and North Carolina sports information director Steve Kirschner said he didn't know either.

Cards' Garcia makes finalists' cut for Naismith Award

Louisville's Francisco Garcia is one of five players from Conference USA and the Carolinas among 20 nationwide to be selected as finalists the 2004 Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Award.

Garcia, C-USA's Preseason Player of the Year, has helped the Cardinals hang on to a spot in the Top 25 for much of the season.

The Naismith Board of Selectors, which includes some of the country's leading basketball coaches, journalists, and administrators, began the selection process earlier this year. They have reduced the number of finalists by a vote to the 20 top male and female players they feel most deserving of the award.

The Naismith Awards program, now in its 36th year, honors outstanding college basketball players in the United States. The awards program was founded by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, an organization dedicated to recognizing the achievements of excellence in basketball for student-athletes.

Here are the 20 men's finalists, with C-USA and Carolinas players denoted in bold:
