HOUSTON — The group that runs Reliant Park,
which includes Reliant Stadium, gained controlling interest in the EV1.net
Houston Bowl Friday, a Houston television station reported.
The group, SMG-Reliant, reached the
agreement to buy the bowl game from its founder, Jerry Ippoliti. The
four-year-old bowl hosted Texas Tech and Navy in December.
It is currently under contract to match
teams from the Big 12 and Southeastern conferences.
"We bring a lot of financial resources and
organizational resources," Reliant Park president and general manager Shea
Guinn told Houston television station KRIV.
"Our goal is when the BCS is up in 2006,
when the music stops, we will have a seat at the table."
When the bowl was founded in 2000, it was
called the galleryfurniture.com Bowl and matched selections from Conference
USA and the Big 12 against one another.
East Carolina defeated Texas Tech 40-27 in
the inaugural game.
Huggins returns to work just in time for loss
WINSTON-SALEM — Cincinnati coach Bob
Huggins arrived in North Carolina hours before tipoff between his
13th-ranked Bearcats and No. 20 Wake Forest on Sunday.
Huggins missed practice Friday and did not
travel with the team Saturday because he is suffering from fatigue,
assistant athletic director Brian Teeter said.
Associate head coach Dan Peters ran
practices in Huggins' absence.
Huggins arrived in Winston-Salem by private
plane in the morning and coached in what turned out to be a losing effort
against the Demon Deacons.
Freshman Chris Paul scored a career-high 30
points to lead Wake to its first win in six all-time meetings with
Cincinnati.
Tony Bobbitt had 23 points for the Bearcats
(17-4), who lost for the third time in five games.
Pitt seeks to give Nike the boot
PITTSBURGH — The University of
Pittsburgh wants to drop Nike as the supplier of its football uniforms and
equipment.
The university filed a lawsuit
last week, asking an Allegheny County judge to determine whether a
2-year-old arrangement with the Beaverton-based company is a valid contract.
Pitt argues it never signed a deal with Nike to provide 100 free uniforms
and other gear for three years.
Nike officials, however, say
that because the school accepted its products, a contract does exists, and
they accused Pitt of trying to get out of deal so it can look for more
lucrative offers from other manufacturers.
