CINCINNATI — Due to an adjusted timetable
for the completion of a new, on-campus stadium, the Cincinnati baseball team
will alter its 2004 schedule, head coach Brian Cleary announced last week.
The change will result in the Bearcats
opening the new facility with a three-game series against Conference USA
opponent East Carolina beginning on Friday, April 14. Game time for the
opener is 6:30 p.m., with a 1 p.m. first pitch scheduled for each of the
following two days.
The Bearcats had originally been scheduled to open UC Baseball Stadium on
Wednesday, March 31, against Xavier, but instead will now travel across town
to face the Musketeers in that day.
What would have been Cincinnati's first
home C-USA series of the year, scheduled for April 2-4 vs. Tulane, has been
shifted to Midland Field in Amelia, Ohio, UC's home field last season.
Another scheduled home game, an April 6
date with Dayton, will now be contested at the Flyers' new stadium on UD's
campus. As previously announced, the Bearcats' game the following day
against Kentucky has been moved to Lexington.
Wave baseball team edges CWS alums/pros
NEW ORLEANS — Junior second baseman Joe
Holland went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and preseason
All-American closer Joey Charron tossed a scoreless ninth as the 2004 Tulane
baseball team pulled out a come-from-behind 6-5 win over a squad composed of
the 2001 College World Series team and current and former professional
players in the Fourth-Annual Alumni Game Saturday afternoon at Turchin
Stadium.
The game was the second of a double-header
as older Tulane alumni played an "Old Timers" game earlier in the day which
saw the "Blue Bombers" defeat the "Mean Green" 10-0.
"This was a great day for Tulane baseball,"
Wave head coach Rick Jones said. "We had a tremendous crowd, had a great
reception last night, and had over 100 alumni show up for today's games. The
team we played today had tremendous talent, and I'm proud of the way this
year's team competed throughout the ballgame. All in all, it was a fun day."
In the "Old Timers" game, the Blue Bombers
scored four runs in the first and never looked back en route to the 10-0
shutout. Infielder Brad Burckel was the offensive hero as the 1994 All-Metro
Conference Tournament honoree went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.
Tulane opens its 2004 regular season on
Friday when it hosts Texas Arlington at 6:30 p.m. The game will be the first
of a three-game weekend series against the Mavericks.
Colorado NOW activist slams female on
recruiting scandal panel
BOULDER — A feminist is calling for the
resignation of one of two chairwomen of the committee investigating the
football sex scandal at the University of Colorado. Regina Cowles, president
of the Boulder chapter of the National Organization of Women, said she is
offended by remarks by Joyce Lawrence, a Republican who served four terms as
a legislator from Pueblo.
Lawrence told KCNC-TV she would ask the
women who claim they were gang-raped by recruits after a night of heavy
drinking "why are they going to parties like this and drinking and taking
drugs, putting themselves in this position?"
She also defended the Pueblo County sheriff
when allegations of sexual misconduct arose during his congressional
campaign last month, telling the Pueblo Chieftain that the claims of past
abuse seemed politically motivated because victims generally take action
right away.
"These comments are unacceptable. She
cannot serve as the co-chair of this thing," Cowles said Saturday. "It shows
she's unreasonably biased against rape and sexual assault victims."
NOW and other groups succeeded in getting
one member of a committee investigating the Air Force Academy scandal
replaced by a victims' advocates after she made remarks similar to those of
Lawrence.
Lawrence said she's not biased and stressed
that drinking "never gives a man a right to assault a woman." But she said
she wants to look into larger issues of alcohol abuse and campus culture
that could lead to sexual harassment or assault.
"It's not just one side that's
responsible," she said. "I think any man that is with a woman and she is
drunk and inebriated should leave, but I also think women should not be
placing themselves in vulnerable situations." She did not return a call
seeking further comment Sunday.
The reaction of members of the Board of Regents to Lawrence's remarks were
mixed.
