BIRMINGHAM — East Carolina practiced for the first time on Wednesday morning at Historic Legion Field.

The day wasn't without controversy. Field crews had painted the logos on the field turf on Tuesday night. That paint wasn't dry for practice.

ECU Director of Football Operations Clifford Snow had some terse words for the field crew. Snow had his guys pull up the cones that were guarding the logos. East Carolina's practice went on without incident.

The logos were apparently dry enough, because they looked good even after the workout.

The Pirates and the Golden Bulls were then treated to a dinner and a show at the Comedy Club Stardome. Both teams were represented on stage as a hypnotist performed his magic. Pat Dosh lead a contingent of a couple of Pirates on stage. Their antics were absolutely comical.

The Pirates will visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Thursday morning. The squad will then practice in the afternoon afternoon. On Thursday night, ECU and USF will compete in a "Bowling and BBQ Challenge" at the Vestavia Bowl in Birmingham.

Tickets still moving

GREENVILLE — With kickoff only two days away, East Carolina fans are about to descend on Birmingham en masse for the PapaJohns.com Bowl.

East Carolina Assistant Athletic Director for Special Projects Lee Workman reported Wednesday evening that ECU's ticket sales are "over 6,500 and still selling. We are expecting 7,500-8,000 Pirates at Legion Field Saturday."

"For a pre-Christmas bowl the Saturday before Christmas, we are extremely pleased with ticket sales," Workman said in an e-mail message. "It is another statement, showing the outstanding support and what great fans ECU Pirate fans are, to all eyes that are currently on ECU."

The Birmingham News reported last Saturday that about 40,000 tickets had been sold for the Dec. 23 game pitting ECU against South Florida. The figure included tickets allocated to the participating schools, sales to corporate sponsors and 5,000 in local general admission sales. At the time the article was published, South Florida reported having sold 4,300 tickets.

Information on purchasing tickets through ECU is available at ecupirates.com or by calling 1-800-DIAL-ECU.
