GREENVILLE — East Carolina head basketball coach Jeff Lebo announced his resignation effective immediately Wednesday afternoon.
The Pirates have stumbled out of the gates this season to a 2-4 record, including a humbling home loss on Sunday to North Carolina A&T.
Assistant coach Michael Perry has accepted the role as interim head coach, said ECU athletic director Jeff Compher. It will be Perry’s second stint in the position after filling in when Lebo underwent hip replacement surgery last season.
Lebo recorded 116 victories during his seven-plus seasons at the helm of the program, making him the winningest coach in the school’s NCAA Division I era.
Under Lebo’s guidance, the Pirates recorded their first-ever 20-win season as a Division I institution in 2012-13 and captured the 2013 CIT postseason tournament title.

Jeff is a nice guy and he did the right thing for ECU. Now is a good time for Compher to follow suit.

Coach Perry might make a good choice, let’s see how the season goes from here. The players here can win.
