Chip goes both ways

East Carolina, winner of six of its last seven games, will try to make it five in a row for the first time since 1999 and 2-1 against Atlantic Coast Conference schools this season. Things havent gone so well for the opponent, N.C. State, which has struggled this season and will not be in a bowl game for the first time since 2009. NCSU hasnt had a winless ACC season since 1959 and N.C. State has never lost to Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest and ECU in the same season. Both are distinctions first year NCSU head coach Dave Doeren would like to avoid. He talked about the opportunities for his team to gain some positives as the season winds down " since we wont be in a bowl game. We want to enjoy those 12 days and do everything we can, as a coaching staff, to have our seniors finish the right way. Thatll be our goal. I know one thing and I told our team the same thing, every obstacle thats put in front of us is put there for a reason and youre judged by how you deal with those obstacles. We have had a lot of them.

The teams have split the eight games they have played since 1996, with each winning the last game at home in overtime ECU in 2010 and N.C. State in 2008.

Pirate coach Ruffin McNeil and staff have worked to keep the emotions of their players grounded. I think keeping the vision in perspective," is the way McNeill describes his team's game to game approach. "I cant tell you how proud I am of our kids and coaches who are grasping this concept. If you can watch the film from the game with me, you can see them play that play the best they can. I use this phrase: All you got, best you got, ball til you fall on that play, and go to the
next one. With that in mind, that keeps it grounded.

About the rivalry with NC State, McNeill said, I know Dave and I have a lot of respect for their program. Theyre all big games right now. We have to make sure we play well. Its a big game for Dave and its a big game for us.

Doeren also grasps the importance of todays rivalry game for both teams. We have a lot to prove and we want to play well for our seniors and we want to finish the season the right way. We are playing a very good football team. I know what were going to get from their team and I know the history of this game. A lot of people have told me about it. I understand what were going into in this football game.

Doeren added, I have been on that side of it in the MAC, youre playing a Big Ten team when you are in the MAC and an ACC team in their (ECUs) situation. I understand what is going on in their campus, their locker room and in their meetings. Its a chip on your shoulder game, for us and them.

WORTH NOTING

The Pirates have won 6 of 19 games against ACC opponents since 2006. ECUs 55-31 victory at UNC-Chapel Hill earlier this season halted a five-game slide, which included a close setback earlier this season to Virginia Tech, a pair of losses to the Tar Heels (11, 12), a defeat by the Hokies (11) and a rout by Maryland ('10).

Wolfpack freshman receiver Jumichael Ramos caught five passes for 109 yards last week versus Boston College. It was only the second 100-yard receiving game this season for an N.C. State player.

State leads East Carolina 16-11 all-time in a rivalry which dates back to 1970. ... Although the Pirates trail the overall series, they have had a slight upper hand lately winning 6 of the last 10 meetings since 1987 (and 8 of the last 14 since 83). ... ECU has taken two of three contests at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, but the Wolfpack is 14-7 in Raleigh. ...
The Pirates have also won two of three neutral site matchups, including the 1992 Peach Bowl.

The Pirates have recorded a takeaway in 12-straight and 27 of the last 30 games. ... Additionally, East Carolina has created two or more turnovers in 17 of the last 29 contests. ECU has won 11 of the last 12 games when forcing two or more turnovers.

East Carolina has limited opponents to 17 or less points six times in 2013, a first since the 2009 campaign. ... In the last four games, the Pirates have surrendered only 65 points an average of only 16.3 ppg.

The Wolfpack's lack of depth on the offensive line is evident when looking at the number of snaps the starters have logged in 2013.  Starting center Quinton Schooley has played every offensive play of the season a total of 737 (81.9 per game). Joe Thuney had played every snap prior to the Syracuse contest, when he had to exit with an injury after 38 snaps.   In three games this season (Clemson, Wake Forest and Florida State), all five starting linemen have played the entire game.

East Carolina has scored 415 points during the 2013 season, just 63 shy of matching the school record of 478 set in 2010. The Pirates need to average 32 ppg in their last two contests to establish a new standard.

Schemes: N.C. State utilizes a spread offensive attack while employing a 4-3 defensive alignment.  ECU will also line up in a spread on offense and presents a multiple 3-4 unit on defense.
