Farewell to a Familiar Foe

Today will be the 39th meeting between Southern Miss and East Carolina. As a result of ECUs move to the American Athletic Conference next season, the contest will mark the last scheduled regular season meeting between two programs that have played annually for 31 straight years and share a 38-game series dating back to 1951. Although the Golden Eagles hold a 27-11 advantage in the series, ECU has won three of the last four.

Both teams enter this game battered and bruised.  Southern Miss has had eight players that were listed as starters on the preseason depth chart lost for at least one game this season, including senior defensive backs Deron Wilson, who was lost in the preseason with an injury, and Jacorius Cotton, who is not eligible in 2013.   The Pirates have seven offensive and four defensive players that are out for the season or suspended  indefinitely. Players will have to step up and continue to play through adversity.

ECU doesn't want to be the team that helps end Southern Miss's losing streak. With the possibility of dark clouds hovering over Dowdy-Ficklen today, many Pirate fans remember a rainy Saturday when Duke ended it's drought, defeating the Pirates in 2002.

Although they have lost 17 consecutive games, the Golden Eagles played the Pirates tough last season in a 24-14 defeat. Fourteen of the 38 games in the series have been decided by seven points or less. This Rivalry has produced some memorable games (1983 Mud Bowl, 1986 Forward lateral, 1995 Fake FG), many of which are chronicled in Alan Hintons Biloxi Sun Herald article and Brian Baileys 2009 Bonesville.net article.

With the script still unwritten, the Pirates remain in control of their Conference USA destiny. Will this be a memorable finale to a great series?

Schemes:
Southern Miss utilizes a spread offensive attack while employing a 4-3 defensive alignment. ECU will also line up in a spread offense and is a multiple 3-4 unit on defense.

WORTH NOTING

The 38-game series with Southern Miss is East Carolina's longtest against any opponent.

The Pirates have recorded a takeaway in eight-straight (and 23 of the last 26) games. Additionally, East Carolina has created two or more turnovers in 14 of the last 25 games. The Golden Eagles have committed at least one turnover in each of the last 33 games. ECU has won 17 of 23 games when it forces two or more turnovers in the Ruffin McNeill era, but is just 6-15 when it doesnt.

The Southern Miss defense has forced at least one turnover in every game this season, and one in each of the last six games dating back to last season.

East Carolinas most productive quarter so far this year has been the fourth, with the most points scored (50) and the fewest allowed (26). In fact, the Pirates have surrendered only one fourth period TD in the last four games.

Junior IR Justin Hardy currently ranks third among all active FBS players nationally in receptions per game. His 17-catch, 230-yard effort against Tulane last week marked the sixth double-digit catch and seventh 100-yard
receiving yard contests of his career. Hardys 230 receiving yards eclipsed a school single-game record that had stood since 1975.

Warren Harveys 21-yard FG to cap ECUs first possession at
Tulane marked the first time this season the Pirates didnt open a contest with a 7-0 lead. East Carolina still has not trailed at the half this year (leads on four occasions and ties with Virginia Tech and Tulane).

ECU has not suffered a blocked kick or punt since the last time Southern Miss visited Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium (2011).

GAME DAY WEATHER

Pirate fans may want to prepare for today's noon matchup with Southern Miss by getting out their foul weather gear. Temperatures in the upper 60s appear favorable but there is a 50 to 60 percent chance of a shower for the Conference USA contest. Winds are supposed to shift from East-northeast to west during the course of the day. Cloudy conditions are in the forecast with 73 percent humidity. (Filed by Al Myatt)
