At Home in the Dome?

East Carolina will try to improve its road record to 3-0 for the first time since 1999 as it takes on Conference USA West Division leader Tulane in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Because of a scheduling quirk and 2012 postseason destination, this will be ECU's third time in the Superdome in its past eight games.

"It helps, Coach Ruffin McNeill said about the familiarity of playing in New Orleans, adding we did the schedule and we're staying in the same place and keeping a bit of the same routine I'm looking forward to going back down there and playing again."

Quarterback Shane Carden believes his past experience with the facility will help, though he acknowledges he was taken aback by the lack of atmosphere there when ECU faced Tulane a year ago. The Pirates overcame two Carden interceptions to hold off the Green Wave 28-23 last November. That was his only multi-interception game aside from a three-pick performance when he was sacked seven times in a 15-10 loss to Virginia Tech earlier this season.

We understand the difficulty of playing in a dome with not a lot of people, Carden said. We went through it last year and understand the feel of a stadium like that. It is different. It can be hard for teams that are a little inexperienced or dont have the leadership that this team does. For this offense to work on Saturday, we have to bring our own excitement and just worry about ourselves.

The last visit to the Big Easy had an unhappy ending for the Pirates, who lost to Louisiana-Lafayette 43-34 in December at the New Orleans Bowl. Carden threw a fourth-quarter interception as ECU drove for a tying or go-ahead score. Im looking forward to coming back to this arena and playing a much better game, he said. Its something I definitely know I can do.

WORTH NOTING

Tulane is first nationally in turnovers gained with 18 (11 interceptions/7 fumbles) and has turned the takeaways into 58 points courtesy of seven touchdowns and three field goals. The Waves 11 interceptions rank first in Conference USA and second nationally. Virginia Tech leads the country with 13.

The Pirates have recorded a takeaway in 33 of their last 38 games. ... Additionally, East Carolina has created two or more turnovers in 14 of the last 25 games. ... ECU has won 17 of 23 games when it forces two or more turnovers in the Ruffin McNeill era, but is just 6-14 in contests when it doesnt.

While the Pirates spread passing attack might be a little short on big single play numbers so far this year, its distribution accuracy (to 15 different receivers) ranks second nationally.

East Carolinas return units have gotten off to a notable start in 2013, ranking sixth (kickoff) and 37th (punt) nationally after the first five contests. ...The Pirates average 11.2 yards per punt return and 29.7 yards per kickoff return, the latter sparked by senior Lance Rays 30.4 ypr clip (11th/FBS).

Quarterback Shane Carden currently ranks among FBS active career leaders in completion percentage (2nd/68.6), completions per game (7th/22.6), passing attempts per game (11th/33.0), total offense per game (19th/250.2) and pass
efficiency rating (21st/144.87).

Tulane coach Curtis Johnson said quarterback Nick Montana did not take many reps in practice Thursday, and his status against East Carolina is a game-time decision. The junior college transfer has started Tulanes first six games, completing 55.7 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has been sacked 20 times and hit repeatedly; the wear and tear has left him limited in practice all week with an unspecified injury. If he is unavailable, Johnson said redshirt freshman Devin Powell would be next in line.

Coach McNeill confirmed at Mondays weekly news conference that senior running back Vintavious Cooper sustained a concussion early in last Saturdays game at Middle Tennessee, and that the 1,000-yard rusher from a season ago is doubtful to play this weekend. Cooper will perform post-concussion testing each day until he is cleared to return. If he is not cleared, it is likely sophomore Chris Hairston and junior college transfer Breon Allen will be asked to carry the rush attack against the Green Wave. Hairston turned in the most notable performance of his ECU career filling in for Cooper at MTSU with personal bests in carries (18), rushing yards (94), receptions (4) and reception yards (35).

The Pirates stand 15th nationally with 15 sacks (-90 yards) after their first five games, the highest total in a similar time span during the Ruffin McNeill era dating back to 2010. Tulane has 12 sacks this season and has recorded at least one sack in 5-of-6 games, including multiple sacks in three games. The Green Wave notched a season-best 5.0 sacks at Louisiana-Monroe two weeks ago.
