Deja Vu: In the regular-season finale of the 2011 season, Marshall hosted East Carolina in a bowl-elimination game. The Thundering Herd ended up winning 34-27 in overtime and going to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl. As for the Pirates, they stayed home for the holidays. Now, fast forward to today. This time East Carolina is at home and can dash Marshall's bowl hopes with a victory.

WORTH NOTING

This game is a must win for both teams. Marshall needs to pick up a win in Greenville to become bowl eligible or its season ends today. The Pirates must win, not to gain bowl eligibility, but to keep intact their hopes of playing in the C-USA Championship game. ECU can win the East Division if they defeat Marshall and UCF loses at home to UAB.
The Pirates have won four straight C-USA games, When scoring 30 or more points, they have won 36 of 41. The Herd is 2-3 on the road this year, allowing at least 37 points in each game.
Seventeen seniors will play their final game inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium today
 ECU has received the opening
kickoff in nine-straight games, the third-longest active streak nationally. Marshall, which has  the longest active streak in the nation, has received the opening kickoff in each of its last 16 games (the last five of 2011 and the first 11 of 2012). San Diego State currently stands at 13 straight games (the last two of 2011 and the first 11 of 2012). Clemson is 8th on the list.
Today's matchup will feature a dynamic battle of philosophies between Marshall's offense and East Carolina's defense. The Herd ranks second nationally in plays from scrimmage of 10 yards or more with 223, which is one behind Texas Tech in that category. Meanwhile, season-to-date, East Carolina's defense has surrendered just 66 plays of 11 yards or more. Marshall has nearly equaled that total with plays that have gone for 20 yards or more (57).

GAME DAY WEATHER

The next best thing to the controlled conditions East Carolina played in last week at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans is the mild day on tap for the Pirates' 2 p.m. kickoff at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium today against Marshall. The high will be in the mid-60s with just 33 percent humidity. Winds will be southwest at seven miles per hour with zero chance of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service. Playing on Friday will be nicer than the conditions on Saturday, the traditional day for college football, as a cold front will move across the region after ECU's Senior Day. (Filed by Al Myatt)
