Anchors Aweigh: The Pirates and Midshipmen will try to navigate through potentially treacherous waters as rain bands from Hurricane Sandy will affect Eastern North Carolina. The Pirates remember and want to prevent a repeat of the outcome of Navy's 2010 invasion of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium when the Midshipmen amassed 521 yards on the ground and eight rushing touchdowns on a rainy Saturday. Both East Carolina and Navy can see the postseason on the horizon. The Pirates need one victory to become bowl eligible for the eighth time since 2000. The Middies need two wins to qualify for a bowl for the ninth time since 2003.

Navy utilizes a triple-option offensive attack while employing a multiple defensive alignment. ECU will line up in a spread offense and use a 3-4 when defending.

WORTH NOTING

ECU has lost 12 straight games when surrendering 200 or more rushing yards and has lost three of its last four (and four of six) home non-conference games.
Although East Carolina has surrendered 269.5 passing and 392.6 total yards per game in its first eight contests, its rush defense average of 123.1 ypg
stands third in C-USA, 32nd nationally. Needless to say, Navys triple-option scheme will challenge that rush defense ranking head on. The Middies have averaged 402.7 rushing yards per game against the Pirates in three previous meetings.
From a defensive standpoint, the Pirates havent allowed a rush over 33 yards this season. ECU held Memphis and UAB to longs of 15 and 13 yards, respectively).
Navy has turned the ball over 12 times this season (nine lost fumbles and three interceptions) after committing just 15 turnovers in all of 2011 (nine lost fumbles and six interceptions). The Middies have not turned the ball over in the last three games.
The Midshipmen and Pirates rank third and sixth, respectively, for fewest penalties committed so far this year. ECU has earned three or less flags in four games, but is coming off a season-high seven at UAB.
ECU assistant coach Donnie Kirkpatrick was on Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green's staff when Green was head coach at UT-Chattanooga.  Kirkpatrick succeeded Green as head coach of the Mocs when Green left for N.C. State in 2000.

GAME DAY WEATHER

This will truly be a matchup affected by conditions at sea, which may be appropriate as Navy and the Pirates meet at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Temperature for the 3:30 p.m. kickoff is projected to be in the mid-60s and won't vary significantly during the nonconference contest, according to the National Weather Service. The path of Hurricane Sandy along the Atlantic Coast is projected to create winds North-Northeast at 18 miles per hour during the game. The chance of precipitation is 90 percent during the game with 100 percent cloud cover. Conditions would appear to favor the Midshipmen, who have a ground-oriented offense, while East Carolina throws more. But, as former ECU coach Steve Logan once observed, "the receivers know where they're going, the defensive backs don't." (Filed by Al Myatt)
