Gold Rush:  After facing challenging AQ Bowl Championship Series opponents in their previous games, both teams will be battling for a treasured Conference USA victory in a pivotal, early-season, interdivisional clash at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.  Pirate fans are encouraged to wear GOLD tonight.  After being sacked seven times last week, ECU will look to protect soph QB Shane Carden against another active defense.  The Pirate defense will look to put pressure on UTEP senior QB Nick Lamaison. Given enough time, Lamaison can connect with receivers with Michael Edwards and Jordan Leslie, each of whom is averaging 70-plus receiving yards per game.

GAME DAY WEATHER

East Carolina plays its first night game of the season at home against Texas-El Paso at 7 p.m. It will be the coolest kickoff of the season for the Pirates with the temperature expected to be 67 degrees. The National Weather Service is calling for 100 percent humidity, southeast winds at five miles per hour, a 40 percent chance of precipitation and 90 percent cloud cover. Conditions should allow fans to stay in their seats and give ECU full home field advantage, unlike the oppressive heat of the season opener with Appalachian State. The chance of a thunderstorm means there could be a stoppage of play if there is lightning in the area. (Filed by Al Myatt)
