Greg's Game Day Breakdown

East Carolina vs. Appalachian State

Sept. 1, 2012

By Greg Vacek

HARD REALITY: Appalachian State, a Football Championship Subdivision member with aspirations of moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision, has an established track record of deflating the egos of cocky FBS opponents. Ironically, today's season opener
falls on the fifth anniversary of the Mountaineers most recent and notable victory over an FBS opponent, a 34-32 triumph at No. 5 (AP) Michigan on Sept. 1, 2007.

WORTH NOTING

Appalachian leads the all-time series with its former Southern Conference rival, 19-11, but has not defeated ECU since 1975 (five-straight losses) and has not won in Greenville since 1959 (six straight losses).  ECU has won 21-straight games against FCS members
East Carolina is led by a pair of former Mountaineers. ECU head coach Ruffin McNeill was an assistant coach under Jerry Moore at Appalachian State for seven seasons (1989-91, 1993-96) and associate head coach John Wiley was a member of Moores Appalachian staff for 19 years (1989-90, 1993-2009).
ECU has won 31 of the last 36 games when scoring 30 or more points...has lost 11-straight games when scoring 20 or less points ...has won three-straight season openers played at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium  ...has won 15 of the last 16 games when converting third downs at 50% or higher ...has won 13 of the last 15 games when recording three or more sacks.
Suspended for a violation of team policy

GAME DAY WEATHER NOTES

The National Weather Service is calling for a high of 93 degrees during the Appalachian State-East Carolina game today with 45 percent humidity, a 10 percent chance of precipitation and winds north-northwest at six miles per hour. The warm weather could mean depth and conditioning will be factors. That could favor the Pirates, who have more scholarships. It's the kind of weather that will give a read on what kind of summer ECU had under strength and conditioning guru Jeff Connors. There's a 20 percent chance of a thunderstorm at 5 p.m., which could alter postgame tailgating plans. (Filed by Al Myatt)
