GREENVILLE —  Monmouth pitchers Ricky Dennis and Justin Andrews combined for a one-hit shutout in a 4-0 win at East Carolina on Sunday to prevent a three-game sweep in the series by the Pirates.

Dennis (2-2) started and went eight innings. He lost a bid for a perfect game when he hit Charlie Yorgen with a pitch with one out in the sixth.

He had a no-hitter until Kirk Morgan's pinch hit single through the right side in the eighth.

Bryce Harman had walked before Morgan broke up the no-hitter and Parker Lamm pinch ran for him.

The Hawks had a triple play on a line out by Garrett Brooks to first baseman Shaine Hughes to end the eighth.

It was the first triple play in Clark-LeClair Stadium history.

Dennis finished with one walk and six strikeouts. Andrews retired the Pirates in order in the ninth on 12 pitches.

ECU slipped to 13-7 going into a game with Duke at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Ryan Bailey went 2-for-4 with an RBI as Monmouth improved to 7-11.

The Hawks scored runs in the first, third, fourth and eighth innings. Monmouth had nine hits off of three ECU pitchers.

Davis Kirkpatrick (0-1) started for the Pirates and went three innings. He allowed three hits, two runs (both earned) and walked two while striking out three.

Jimmy Boys pitched four and one-third innings. He yielded five hits, a pair of earned runs and struck out four without a walk.

Joe Ingle went the final inning and two-thirds for ECU. He allowed one hit and had one strikeout.

Pete Papicun, Chris Gaetano and Justin Trochiano also had RBIs for the visitors.

Both clubs had errorless efforts defensively.
