HOUSTON — Rice scored four runs
in the bottom of the sixth inning after East Carolina had come back from
a 2-0 deficit to tie the score and the host Owls took a 7-2 win in the
second game of a nonconference series Saturday afternoon. Rice (7-7)
bounced back from
a 10-1 loss to the No. 16 Pirates
(11-4) in the series opener on Friday night.
The deciding contest in the
three-game set starts at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) today.
Designated hitter Andrew Dunlap led
the Owls at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
Dominic DiCaprio and Ford Proctor
each had two hits and an RBI for Rice.
Travis Watkins had a solo homer to
left center for ECU in the fourth inning to draw the Pirates within 2-1
after the Owls had scored lone runs in the first and second off ECU
left-hander Jacob Wolfe.
The Pirates starter went four and
two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs with one walk
and one strikeout.
Wolfe was not involved in the
decision after ECU tied the score at 2 with a run in the sixth.
Parker Lamm led off the tying frame
with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Charlie Yorgen moved
Lamm to second before Watkins drew a walk. A double steal put both
runners in scoring position before a ground ball to first by Kirk Morgan
brought Lamm home.
Lamm finished with two of the
Pirates' four hits. Nine players accounted for Rice's 12 hits.
DiCaprio, Proctor, Dunlap and Connor
Tekyl had hits in Rice's four-run sixth.
Glenn Otto (2-1) pitched three and
one-third innings in relief of starter Blake Fox to get the win for the
Owls. Otto allowed one hit, no runs and struck out four without a walk.
Freshman Sam Lanier (0-1) took the
loss for the Pirates. Lanier yielded two hits and two runs in two-thirds
of an inning.
Evan Voliva, Chris Holba and Denny
Brady also saw mound duty for ECU. Brady held the Owls scoreless over
the final inning and one-third.
