Pirates come back for sweep

GREENVILLE — East Carolina
faced its first deficit of the young season and responded by rallying
for a 5-3 nonconference win over Longwood on Sunday afternoon before
3,067 at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Pirates starter Jimmy Boyd yielded a
pair of runs in the opening frame but ECU scored three times in the
bottom of the first and led the rest of the way to sweep three games
from the Lancers of the Big South Conference.
Parker Lamm started the Pirates in
the bottom of the first with a bunt single. Travis Watkins singled to
put ECU runners at first and third. Bryce Harman singled to center on a
full-count pitch to bring in Lamm.
Eric Tyler drove in Watkins with the
tying run on a single to left. A sacrifice fly by Dwanya Williams-Sutton
brought in the go-ahead run.
A two-out triple by Jeff Nelson in
the fourth scored Wesley Phillips for a 4-2 Pirates lead.
ECU's final run came with two down in
the seventh after a single through the right side by Charlie Yorgen.
Watkins followed with an RBI double to give the Pirates a 5-3 advantage.
Boyd worked five innings for the win.
He allowed four hits and struck out three without a walk.
Nick Durazo struck out five in two
innings of relief. He allowed three hits and one earned run.
Joe Ingle held the visitors scoreless
in the eighth and ninth for his second save. He gave up one hit and had
one strikeout.
The three ECU pitchers did not issue
a walk and the Pirates were errorless on defense.
ECU (3-0) hosts North Carolina A&T –
0-3 after being swept at home by Navy – on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
