GREENVILLE —  East Carolina faced its first deficit of the young season and responded by rallying for a 5-3 nonconference win over Longwood on Sunday afternoon before 3,067 at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Pirates starter Jimmy Boyd yielded a pair of runs in the opening frame but ECU scored three times in the bottom of the first and led the rest of the way to sweep three games from the Lancers of the Big South Conference.

Parker Lamm started the Pirates in the bottom of the first with a bunt single. Travis Watkins singled to put ECU runners at first and third. Bryce Harman singled to center on a full-count pitch to bring in Lamm.

Eric Tyler drove in Watkins with the tying run on a single to left. A sacrifice fly by Dwanya Williams-Sutton brought in the go-ahead run.

A two-out triple by Jeff Nelson in the fourth scored Wesley Phillips for a 4-2 Pirates lead.

ECU's final run came with two down in the seventh after a single through the right side by Charlie Yorgen. Watkins followed with an RBI double to give the Pirates a 5-3 advantage.

Boyd worked five innings for the win. He allowed four hits and struck out three without a walk.

Nick Durazo struck out five in two innings of relief. He allowed three hits and one earned run.

Joe Ingle held the visitors scoreless in the eighth and ninth for his second save. He gave up one hit and had one strikeout.

The three ECU pitchers did not issue a walk and the Pirates were errorless on defense.

ECU (3-0) hosts North Carolina A&T – 0-3 after being swept at home by Navy – on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
