Bulls edge ECU, 2-1

TAMPA, FL — South Florida took a 2-1 American Athletic Conference win over visiting East Carolina on Friday night on a 2-run home run by Luke Maglich in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Maglich connected with a 2-1 pitch from Reid Love (3-3) after Luke Borders started the inning with a single to left field.

The Pirates (20-14, 3-4 AAC) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on singles by Hunter Allen, Love and Travis Watkins.

Watkins went 2-for-4 with an RBI as ECU outhit the hosts, 7-6, and played errorless defense.

Love pitched six and one-third innings, allowing six hits and striking out four. Joe Ingle and Nick Durazo turned in scoreless relief stints.

Junior right-hander Jimmy Herget (6-1) went eight innings for South Florida (23-11, 6-1) with nine strikeouts before Tommy Peterson came on to record his 11th save.

Game two of the three-game series is set for tonight at 6:30. Left-hander Evan Kruczynski (5-1, 1.49 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Pirates against right-hander Casey Mulholland (3-4, 3.17).
