Pirates rally to clinch series

ELON — East Carolina was down to its
last out and trailed 8-7 at Elon on Saturday afternoon before rallying
for four runs in the top of the ninth and an 11-8 win.
With two down and nobody on in the
ninth, Pirates pinch hitter Luke Bolka reached base on an error and went
to second on the play. Hunter Allen singled through the left side and
advanced to second as Bolka scored the tying run.
ECU took a 9-8 lead on Garrett
Brooks' RBI single. Brooks stole second and Charlie Yorgen walked before
Bryce Harman connected for a two-run double to left center.
Reid Love (2-1) pitched two innings
of relief for the win although he yielded three runs, all earned in the
eighth. He allowed five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Jacob Wolfe started and went six and
one-third innings for ECU (12-6), which followed up on
a
10-3 win over the Phoenix (8-8) on Friday. Wolfe
surrendered six hits, five runs, three earned, with one walk and four
strikeouts.
Jimmy Boyd followed Wolfe to the
mound, recording the last two outs in the seventh.
The Pirates held a 14-12 edge in
hitting. Harman went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Luke Lowery hit his
seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning that
put ECU ahead 5-0. Lowery was 2-for-5 with three runs driven in.
Elon scored three runs in the second
and two more in the seventh before taking an 8-7 lead on a 3-run homer
by Ryan Cooper in the eighth.
Cooper and Nick Zammarelli each had
three hits and three RBIs for the Phoenix.
ECU will be going for a sweep when
the teams meet at 1:30 p.m. today at Elon.
