Pirates enjoy baseball weather

GREENVILLE — East Carolina defeated Old Dominion 9-7 on Wednesday as 2,155 made their way to Clark-LeClair Stadium on a great afternoon to be outside.

The Pirates (6-5) scored twice in the seventh inning to snap a tie score at 5 and ECU maintained the lead.

Bryce Harman reached on an error to start the go-ahead frame and Travis Watkins, who went 3-for-4, followed with a single to right field. Harman scored as the Monarchs' rightfielder misplayed the single by Watkins.

A single By Charlie Yorgen put runners at first and third. Jeff Nelson picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice as the Pirates went ahead 7-5.

After ODU (2-5) pulled within 7-6, ECU added two runs in the eighth. Parker Lamm had a one-out infield single and moved to third on a hit by Garrett Brooks. Lamm scored on a wild pitch. Brooks subsequently came home on a passed ball.

The Monarchs outhit the Pirates 13-9 but also committed three errors to one for ECU. Five of the Pirates' runs were earned.

The Pirates got off to a good start offensively with a three-run first. Starting pitcher Reid Love was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first. Lamm walked and Eric Tyler got aboard on an error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt, which allowed Love to score. A ground ball by Harman brought Lamm home. Watkins had an infield hit before Tyler scored on a ground out to first by Yorgen.

ODU tied the score with three runs in the second.

The Pirates took a 4-3 lead in the third after Harman doubled and scored on a ground out by Yorgen.

Tyler doubled and scored on a single by Watkins in the fourth for a 5-3 ECU advantage.

Love went five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned. He walked one and struck out one.

Kirk Morgan (2-0) got the win in two and one-third innings of relief. He allowed four hits and two runs, both earned, while walking one and whiffing two.

Freshman Joe Ingle got his first save, coming to the mound for the final inning and two-thirds. He yielded two hits, one earned run, and walked three while fanning two.

Nick Lustrino had a home run to lead off the eighth for ODU and teammate Connor Myers finished with three RBIs.

The Pirates start a three-game series with Monmouth (0-6) at 4 p.m. on Friday. Games also are scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
