DALLAS — Five Southern Methodist players scored in double figures as the host Mustangs took a 77-54 American Athletic Conference win over East Carolina on Saturday afternoon.

Terry Whisnant of the Pirates scored 24 points and teammate Caleb White added 14 but it was not enough to offset the balanced effort by SMU (14-4, 5-1 AAC).

Nic Moore scored 14 points to lead the Mustangs. Markus Kennedy tallied 12. Ben Moore and Ryan Manuel had 11 points each. Sterling Brown finished with 10 points.

A crowd of 7,001 was on hand at Moody Coliseum.

Michel-Ofik Nzege had eight points and 10 rebounds for ECU (8-10, 1-4), which trailed 31-29 on the boards.

White and freshman B.J. Tyson had five assists apiece for the Pirates. Michael Zangari blocked three SMU shots. White and Tyson each controlled five rebounds.

The Mustangs took the lead 21 seconds into the game and maintained the upper hand the rest of the way.

SMU led 34-22 at the half. Its biggest lead was 33 points with 8:22 left to play.

ECU's next game is at home at noon Saturday, Jan. 24, against Tulsa (12-5, 5-0), which won 75-58 at South Florida on Saturday. The game is scheduled to be shown on the ESPNews network.
