Marshall scored the game's first 12 points and never looked back in trouncing cold-shooting, out-of-kilter East Carolina 77-56 Saturday night in a Conference USA matchup in Huntington, WV.

Junior guard DeAndre Kane scored 22 points to pace the rout as the Thundering Herd improved to 9-9 overall, 2-1 in C-USA.

The outcome halted a two-game winning streak for ECU, which fell to 11-6, 2-2 in the league.

In a dominating defensive performance, Marshall built its advantage to 43-23 by halftime and increased the margin to as much as 29 in the middle stages of the second half.

The Herd shot 47.6 percent from the field on 30-of-63, while the Pirates were true on only 32.8 percent of their attempts (21-of-64.)

Kane, whose sterling outing included eight assists and three steals, got double-figure scoring support from junior forward Elijah Pittman (19 points) and senior forward Dennis Tinnon and junior guard D.D. Scarver (11 points apiece.)

East Carolina senior guard Miguel Paul was only 4-of-14 from the floor but hit 8-of-9 from the free throw line and led the team with 17 points. Junior forward Robert Sampson had 10 points and 17 rebounds, while senior forward Maurice Kemp and junior guard Akeem Richmond each added 10 points for the Pirates.

ECU takes on another road assignment on Wednesday when it tangles with UAB at 8 p.m. before beginning a two-game home stand on Saturday in a 5 p.m. matchup against Texas-El Paso (TV: WITN Channel 7.)
