Junior lefthander Tyler Joyner surrendered
only six hits and East Carolina battered a parade of six Houston pitchers
for 15 hits as the Pirates overwhelmed the Cougars 16-1 in a Conference USA
matchup at Clark-LeClair Stadium Friday night.
Joyner (5-0) went the distance in the
truncated affair, which was called in the bottom of the seventh in keeping
with the league's 15-run mercy rule. Joyner struck out five, walked one and
hit one batsman.
Sophomore first baseman Chase McDonald, junior
outfielder John Wooten and senior catcher Zach Wright launched homers for
East Carolina. Wooten had a particularly fruitful day, going 4-for-4 with 3
RBIs and scoring four runs.
Houston (11-18, 1-7) held a brief lead after
squeezing out a run in the first on a single, a wild pitch and back-to-back
bunts, but the Pirates (22-8, 6-2 C-USA) responded with five runs in the
bottom of the inning and the rout was on.
East Carolina,
which defeated the Cougars 10-3 on Thursday,
will go for the sweep in the three-game series on Saturday (10 a.m.).
